Converged infrastructure is an approach to managing a modular data center that relies on a specific vendor and the vendor’s partners to provide pre-configured bundles of hardware and software. Converged infrastructure is sometimes called “infrastructure in a box”. Cisco Systems’ Unified Computing System, a virtualization hardware offering that combines Cisco servers and networking with VMware vSphere and EMC storage, is often cited as an example of a converged infrastructure. Converged Infrastructure referring to technology where the complete server profile, including I/O (NICs, HBAs, KVM), networking (VLANs, IP load balancing), and storage connectivity (LUN mapping, switch control) are all abstracted and defined/configured in software. The result is a pooling of physical servers, network resources and storage resources that can be assigned on-demand.

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the technique of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server. As a concept, VDI separates a personal computer desktop environment from a physical machine and stores entire programs, applications, processes and data on a remote central server. This allows users to access desktops from any device which has a web browser. The shared resource model facilitated by VDI offers several advantages over traditional individual desktop models. Simple and fast desktop provisioning, reduced downtime, lower licensing cost, longer refresh cycle and reduced hardware cost are some of the advantages for considering VDI as a solution for enterprise desktop infrastructure. According to a report by Gartner, virtual desktop market will grow to 49 million desktop units by 2013, and may make up as much as 40% of the worldwide "professional PC market" by revenue.

zLAMP: Web's Most Popular Software Stack on IBM System z

In recent years, web development and deployment has become extremely fast and easy with the usage of open source software development tools and frameworks. The usage of open source software has reduced capital and operating expenses for web startups to a greater extend that there is a significant increase in the volume of new internet startups with applications developed using open source software. One of the widely used open source stack for web application development is LAMP. As the expansion implies, LAMP stack consists of a web server (Apache), a database server (MySQL) and a set of scripting languages (PHP/Perl/Python) that can run on any flavor of Linux. In general it is described as an open source operating system, open source web server, open source database server and open source programming languages. The Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) stack can provide an efficient and cost effective open source architecture to build and run web applications. This article introduces LAMP software stack on zLinux (Linux on IBM System z). Let's call it zLAMP.
